The 1st meeting of the BRICS Joint Committee on Space Cooperation Successfully Held

On May 25, the 1st meeting of the BRICS Joint Committee on Space Cooperation was successfully held virtually, marking the official establishment of the BRICS Joint Committee on Space Cooperation and opening the new chapter for joint observation and data sharing cooperation of BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation (RSSC). Mr. ZHANG Kejian, Administrator of the China National Space Administration (CNSA), served as the chairman of the Joint Committee this year. Mr. Carlos Augusto Teixeira de Moura, President of the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB), Mr. Dmitry Rogozin, Director General of the State Space Corporation “Roscosmos”(ROSCOSMOS), Mr. Somanath S. , Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, and Mr. Hendrik Burger, Representative of the South African National Space Agency, attended the meeting.

 Mr. Zhang Kejian pointed out that the establishment of the Joint Committee will guide the cooperation of the BRICS RSSC to better serve the socio-economic development of the BRICS countries, promote the BRICS space authorities to develop higher levels in the fields of environmental protection, disaster prevention and mitigation, and address climate change to achieve efficient sharing and effective use of data, and make new contributions and provide new impetus to BRICS cooperation.

The space authorities of the five countries introduced the space activities carried out by each country in the past year and the implementation of the "Agreement on the cooperation of the BRICS remote sensing satellite constellation". The Terms of Reference for the BRICS Joint Committee on Space Cooperation, Technical Regulations for Data Exchange of the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation, and Implementing Procedures of Joint Observation of the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation are adopted by the Joint Committee, and reiterated that Cooperation on BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation is demonstrating an example for building a sustainable partnership in the field of space activities, which would effectively contribute to the sustainable development of the BRICS countries.

Members of the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation Cooperation Working Group, representatives of diplomatic departments of all parties, representatives of space authorities and representatives of relevant enterprises attended the meeting.
