BRICS Women's Leadership Forum: 'Unlocking women's potential could be key to global development'

A leadership forum for women, sponsored by the BRICS group of nations, has been held in Beijing. The BRICS are the five major emerging nations, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Lu Sirui was at the forum and brought us this report.

Representatives across the BRICS countries attended the forum, both in-person, and online.

Awards were handed out to outstanding women in different industries.

A representative from a Chinese international trade organization highlighted the importance of using the BRICS mechanism to help with the professional development of women.

REN HONGBIN Chairman, China Council for the Promotion of Intl Trade "The CCPIT will build multilateral cooperation platforms to help more women enjoy the benefits of BRICS cooperation, promote friendship and economic development of the BRICS people, and create a better future altogether."

During the conference, a report on BRICS' women's business development was released.

It says BRICS countries have been removing barriers for more women to develop on a greater stage.

Industry insiders say unlocking the potential of more women can be conducive to the global economy and that many have the capabilities to play a much greater role in global development.

LU SIRUI Beijing "However, the report also says the labor participation gender gap is still wide. Also, women are more likely to acquire temporary jobs compared to men and their career is easier to be interrupted. Industry insiders say more supportive measures are needed from the society.
