Top Chinese legislator urges enhanced parliamentary exchanges within BRICS

BEIJING -- Li Zhanshu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, on Tuesday called on the legislative bodies of BRICS countries to play an active role in consolidating BRICS unity and deepening cooperation.


Li made the remarks when addressing a BRICS parliamentary forum, which he presided over via video link.


Noting that the friendly exchanges between legislative bodies have provided legal guarantees and policy support to BRICS cooperation, Li said China's NPC is ready to enhance cooperation with the legislative bodies of BRICS countries to promote the development of partnership and contribute to the recovery and sustainable development of the world economy.


Li called on BRICS legislative bodies to uphold fairness and justice to maintain peace and security. He also urged all sides to continue enhancing coordination to accelerate the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.


Noting that exchanges among legislative bodies is an important part of BRICS cooperation, Li called for actively expanding exchanges among legislative bodies of BRICS countries, boosting communications on state governance, and improving legislation quality.


Senior lawmakers of other BRICS countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa, also attended the virtual forum.
