On 21 July 2022, China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) hosted the 2022 IP BRICS Coordination Group Meeting in a virtual format. National Institute of Industrial Property of Brazil (INPI), Federal Service for Intellectual Property of Russia Federation (ROSPATENT), Office of the Controller-General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks of India (CGPDTM) and Companies and Intellectual Property Commission of South Africa (CIPC) participated in the meeting. YUAN Qi, inspector from CNIPA, attended the meeting and delivered the opening remark.

During the meeting, the BRICS intellectual property (IP) offices briefed about latest progress and future plan of respective projects and discussed the revision of the Operational Guideline Framework and the update of the IP BRICS website. They also exchanged ideas on the arrangements for the 14th BRICS Heads of Intellectual Property Offices (HIPO) meeting to be held in September 2022 and reached consensus on the meeting date and agenda items. Plans for the IT workshop and Examiners’ Training Program that will be held later this year were also discussed. This meeting laid a solid foundation for the achievement of more pragmatic cooperation outcomes, as well as the successful convening of the upcoming events.

The IP BRICS cooperation mechanism was established in 2012, aiming at strengthening cooperation and coordination in the IP area. Currently, the cooperation scope already covers fields such as patent, trademark and industrial design, and a well-functioning cooperation system has been formed, which plays an increasingly important role in the international IP forums.
